Error when installing WebSphere Message Broker for Linux x86 V6.0

When running the WebSphere Message Broker Install I found that the X Windows install did not work on my Fedora 6 Linux VM I had to use the console install.

I first suspected it was most likely to be the GNU Java. As part of a default Linux build it is the default jvm in the system path.

In this case I changed my $PATH to use an existing IBM jvm which existed as part of my WAS install. The process I followed are below, however though this has worked for many of my other IBM installation issues, it did not work here. I resorted to using the -console option to skip the x windows interface.

OK now I will create the group first, unlike the mq install where the group is created wmb expects you to create a user and a group

    groupadd mqbrkrs

    ./setuplinuxia32 -console

    Follow instructions ....
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If your interested? Below are some of the things I tried to get the x windows install working.

FYI: I could not get the x windows install to work as yet as resorted to using Redhat, which is a supported platform. Anyway to help others I have included some of the things I tried to get message broker installed on Fedora 6 using x windows.

    ./setuplinuxia32
    InstallShield Wizard

    Initializing InstallShield Wizard...

    Searching for Java(tm) Virtual Machine...
    .
    Preparing Java(tm) Virtual Machine...
    .................................. etc etc
The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the -console or -silent flag.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Error: The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the -console or -silent flag.

Here is the transcript of what I did to try and resolve this problem.

I thought I had to set the path to include the IBM Java first before the Gnu one.

Let's look at my default path: echo $PATH
    /usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin

    java -version
    java version "1.4.2"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 20070626 (Red Hat 4.1.2-13)

Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

If you type: which java you will see that path the GNU java is on.
    /usr/bin/java

Because I know I have an IBM WebSphere installed I can use the java binary from the WebSphere install, by setting a new path.

    PATH=/apps/was/ws61/java/jre/bin:$PATH

    java -version
    java version "1.5.0"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build pxi32dev-20060511 (SR2))
    IBM J9 VM (build 2.3, J2RE 1.5.0 IBM J9 2.3 Linux x86-32 j9vmxi3223-20060504 (JIT enabled)
    J9VM - 20060501_06428_lHdSMR
    JIT - 20060428_1800_r8
    GC - 20060501_AA)
    JCL - 20060511a

You can see it finds IBM java, I then tried updating Firefox, still did not work

    [root@websphere2 wmb]# yum search mozilla > mozilla.txt
    [root@websphere2 wmb]# yum install firefox.i386

    --------------------------------------------------------

Found that there was log in /root/

    mqsi6_install.log

I could not resolve this issue, so I resorted to using the console....

Maybe I can come back to this another day?
